This event sparks envisioning the future and gives us tools on how to get there.
Computer, magazine, glue, scissors, pens, paper, prizes for the kickoff activity
GOAL:
YOU NEED:
1. Kickoff
INSTRUCTIONS:
Find 2-3 objects in your house: anything works here - ornament, toothbrush, book, fork... etc. In 3 minutes (set a timer), pairs brainstorm a new name and as many different uses for the first item as possible. After the time is up, they share what they have come up with. The most creative team gets a prize 🏆 (think: finger sandwich, piece of chocolate, cocktail umbrella...up to you).
Then present the next object and play again.
DISCUSSION:
-
How do curiosity and our imagination encourage new opportunities?
-
How do routines affect our imagination?
2. Food for Thought
Watch Imagining the Future (3 min) by Xiye Bastida.
-
What are your thoughts and feelings about the future you were just asked to imagine?
-
How does that change your perspective on the usual narrative around climate change?
3. Discussion
INSTRUCTIONS:
Create a collage of pictures and words that show what you think a successful future looks like. If you prefer to do this activity online you can use Padlet to collect images and comments from everyone.
DISCUSSION:
-
What do you think are the biggest obstacles of achieving this future?
-
What tools can we access to get us there?
4. Action
INSTRUCTIONS:
Get inspired to take action in this interview with by Jane Fonda 'Why I protest for climate justice'. (14 min)
DISCUSSION:
-
What do you think is an activist?
-
Do you see yourself as an one? Why, why not?
Ask the group whether they know if any groups similar to Jane Fonda's Fire Drill Fridays or any other organization advocating for the planet and tell the group a little about these. If not many come up, you could guide the group to the activism section on the resources page.
-
Which organization did you like? Why?
5. Love Letters to the Planet
INSTRUCTIONS:
Instructions: Watch Voice for the planet (1 min), a global online action launched by David Attenborough calling on world leaders to agree to halt and reverse humanity's impact on nature and protect our planet.
Then as a group write and sign a pledge of what you as individuals or/and a group will do to create the future you wish for. After completing all three session, you would have come across many things that can be included. If you need inspiration you can check out the pledge on the Voice for the Planet website.
6. Toast
INSTRUCTIONS:
You know the drill! Brainstorm a one sentence summary of the event; something that stood out, something you enjoyed. Finish the event by raising the glasses to this.
